Kangaroos legend Wayne Carey has urged his former club to consider going after Collingwood big man Mason Cox.

Cox is without a deal for next season and with Collingwood on the look out for a new coach he faces the prospect of being on the outer when seeking a new deal.

The American has found himself out of the team since round four due to poor form and injuries throughout the season. When playing at VFL though Cox has failed to fire.

Carey believes that Cox has plenty to offer going forward even if that isn't at the Pies.

“Yes I do, I think he‘s worth a crack at another club,” he said.

“I think it’s at a club that’s not going so well and just needs a big target inside 50. For instance, if he went to a North Melbourne, I think that helps out a guy like (Nick) Larkey.

Carey said while Cox would be a valuable acqusition he wouldn't go to North as the main man.

Instead Carey believes that Cox would go there to essentially help take some of the load off North's young forward line.

“Just to help, like I said, a young forward develop a little bit better. That’s his role now I think.”

Cox kicked 14 goals in 11 games last year while he has managed 6.5 this year before dropping out of the side.

Darcy Cameron's form at Collingwood has seen Cox fall further out of favour and it is likely the new coach will continue to look to develop younger players, leaving the 30-year-old in trouble for a new contract.

Cox has some played some massive games on the biggest stage and would provide a massive boost in big game experience the Kangaroos are lacking.
