The AFL have announced that fans will be able to attend the footy in Melbourne this weekend.

Melbourne is currently dealing with 23 active cases of COVID-19, including one case that attended the football on Sunday afternoon.

AFL.com.au reporter Mitch Cleary has said that games will go ahead with fans in attendance this weekend despite the growing concern.

Marvel Stadium hosts the hotly anticipated clash between the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne on Friday night, with that game now set to be played with the roof open.

There are no details yet on crowd sizes but they are expected to be released Wednesday afternoon.

Acting Premier James Merlino has said that at this stage AFL games will continue with crowds subject to restrictions including mask wearing.

He did however admit that could change in the next 24 hours once health officials make an assessment of the current outbreak.

Melbourne acquired 10 new locally transmitted cases on Tuesday and there is a strong chance that number will grow heading towards the weekend.
