A Carlton father-son is firmly in contention for the first round of this year's draft off the back of another strong game at this year's U18s National Championships.

The carnival concluding game between Vic Metro and Vic Country also saw a host of other names end their champs on a high, while over in SA, there was a tight contest in a match littered with star talent.

A Lions Academy prospect had a strong VFL debut over the weekend, while the U16s National Championships came to a close, with a Vic Metro young gun taking out the Kevin Sheehan Medal as the carnival's best.

Here's all the latest draft news, analysis and standouts from the past few days...

Blues father-son continues to soar

Carlton-tied key defender Harry Dean capped off a stellar U18s National Championships over the weekend with arguably the best-afield performance for Vic Country in their win over Vic Metro.

In the final games of the carnival, Vic Country claimed a five-goal win over their state rival at Morabbin, with Dean a force in defence from the opening term.

Dean, the son of Carlton's two-time premiership player Peter, had six intercept possessions before the first break and ended his afternoon with 11 in total.

That tally added to his 22 disposals, eight marks, seven contested possessions and five score involvements in the win.

Duursma, Greeves collect MVP nods

Gippsland Power utility Willem Duursma was again among his side's best performers on Sunday, amassing 27 disposals, nine contested possessions, six inside 50s, 511 metres gained, six marks, five tackles, eight score involvements and a goal against Vic Metro.

The highly-rated teenager featured across all three lines of the field, getting a good look in the middle after spending most of his carnival in defence.

The silky mover was among the standouts for Vic Country, with his most recent game adding to a strong U18s National Championships that warranted the MVP gong for his side.

Vic Metro handed their award to midfielder Ollie Greeves, who averaged 25.0 disposals, 5.3 marks and 2.8 tackles per game in his side's two-win run.

Greeves was again a key contributor to his side's prospects over the weekend, with 11 of his 23 touches being contested.

Rebels small forward boots five

Vic Country livewire Talor Byrne ended his champs with his best game of the carnival, booting five goals from his 13 disposals against Vic Metro.

10 of those touches led to scores, with Byrne also taking seven marks as a constant headache for the opposition.

Byrne was a late addition for Vic Country, having missed their opening against Western Australia, but made the most of his three games, also adding to his tally against the Allies earlier this month.

Other players of promise from Sunday's affair included Vic Country's Hugo Mikunda (20 disposals, two goals), Cody Walker (24 disposals, four inside 50s, seven score involvements) and Brodie Atkins (24 disposals, 10 contested possessions, seven tackles).

For the losing side, Jack Dalton (28 disposals, 11 contested possessions, six inside 50s, 11 tackles) and Cooper Duff-Tytler (12 disposals, five marks, five score involvements) were solid.

Sturt claimed thriller over Central's U18s

In their third clash of the SANFL U18s season, Sturt and Central District could only be split by a single point for the second time this year.

Their Round 2 clash saw the Bulldogs claim victory by the narrowest of margins, with their most recent meeting going the other way by the same margin.

The affair was heavily built up as a host of SA's best performers at this year's undefeated carnival took to the field, with MVP winner Dyson Sharp and Sturt wingman Harley Barker two notable omissions.

The Double Blues were led by state squad members Louis Kellaway (24 disposals, seven clearances) and Noah Roberts-Thomson (26 disposals, six clearances) in the thrilling win, while Jhett Dahlitz (19 disposals, 7 rebound 50s) was a ball-winner down back for the successful side.

Central's Will Cameron kicked three goals in the loss, his last coming in the dying stages to bring the game within a single point.

Bulldog Jack Gordon recorded a game-high 31 disposals to go with seven tackles and six clearances, while SA forward Aidan Schubert took on the ruck role, earning a return of 24 disposals, 35 hitouts, eight clearances and a goal.

Wingman Matt LeRay had 22 touches, 10 tackles and 11 clearances in a more central role, while 2026 prospect Dougie Cochrane had an almost day, booting 1.3 from his 14 disposals.

Prindable with promise in VFL debut

Brisbane Lions Academy prospect Tyan Prindable looked comfortable at the state league level over the weekend, making his VFL debut against Footscray on Saturday.

The Lions fell to the Bulldogs by 26 points, but the Allies' teenager was a strong contributor for the home side.

Prindable ended his maiden match with 20 disposals, 11 contested possessions, six clearances and five tackles while moving the ball at 90 per cent efficiency.

Swans Academy prospect Kaiden McNamara, an Allies teammate of Prindable's, also made his VFL debut over the weekend, booting one goal from six disposals in an 11-point victory over North Melbourne.

Vic Metro U16s bull takes out Kevin Sheehan Medal

Eastern Ranges U16s talent Baxter Sruk is looming as a name to watch for 2027, enjoying a dominant run with Vic Metro a this year's U16s National Championships.

Sruk booted six goals in his three games as Vic Metro went undefeated, with the big-bodied midfielder hauling in four goals in the win over South Australia on Friday.

The Rowville junior took out the Kevin Sheehan Medal as the player of the carnival, adding to his Vic Metro MVP title.

Bendigo's Max Thompson was another standout at the U16s as a lively presence in the front half for Vic Country to take out his side's MVP.

James Artemis (WA), Hugo Semmler (SA) and Lucas Heazlewood (Tasmania) were among the other MVP winners.
