Port Adelaide is set to challenge the $1500 fine handed to free agent Zak Butters after he was found guilty "using abusive and insulting language towards an umpire" during Sunday's game against St Kilda".

Power chairman David Koch spoke on the club's position.

"We'll get the findings (from the Tribunal on Wednesday)," Koch said on FiveAA.

"And work out whether to appeal. I think it's pretty certain we will."

Butters was "incredibly disappointed" with the outcome, and was grateful for the club's support, which may extend to an appeal.

"The club is deeply disappointed in the Tribunal's verdict and rejects any suggestion that questions Zak's integrity," Port Adelaide chief executive Matthew Richardson said.

"Zak is a man of outstanding character and we are acutely aware of the toll these proceedings take, not only for him but for his family and those closest to him."

The Tribunal's reasoning for a guilty verdict will be provided on Wednesday, further stretching this case out.

The club's statement also added: "Port Adelaide stands unequivocally with Butters and will await receipt from the AFL of the formal Tribunal findings Wednesday morning before considering grounds for an appeal."

Port Adelaide would have to fork out $10,000 based on two aspects of the case: that no Tribunal could reasonably come to that decision or there's an error of law.
