Dual Brownlow Medallist Gary Ablett has not improved the Cats, claims former Geelong player Cameron Mooney.

Ablett worked manfully in the Cats' win against the Swans, collecting 17 disposals. He only made two tackles during the course of the game, however - ramping up question over his defensive game.

By comparison, Geelong captain Joel Selwood laid nine tackles, while Jamaine Jones piled on 11.

Ablett had made his return to Geelong late 2017 and was tipped to form a premiership winning trio with Selwood and Dangerfield.

Former Cat Mooney, who won premierships with Ablett suggests that the champion midfielder was not playing his best footy.

When quizzed whether Ablett had made Geelong a better side, Mooney said: "No, he hasn't. Not right now."

“And he hasn’t been playing great footy. He’s not giving himself to the team. Just those little things.

“And until he does that he won’t improve the team.”

Ablett's tackle numbers are around the lowest they've ever been, excluding his debut season. He has, however, averaged 28 possessions in 2018.

This comes in comparison to Ablett's final season at the Gold Coast Suns, where he averaged 5.5 tackles.

Premiership player and Fox Footy analyst David King added to the remarks made by Mooney, claiming that if the Cats were angling for a premiership opportunity, then Ablett will need to seriously improve his game.

“Gary is brilliant with the ball, we know that,” King said.

“But they will leak goals, this midfield, if they don’t improve collectively."
