There was plenty to be excited about at Bomberland in 2023, however, most
Essendon fans might've been left disappointed with how their first season under Brad Scott ended.
The Bombers were right in the finals race before a late-season fadeout left them in 11th and with a losing record. Given they might not have been expected to challenge for a top-eight spot, many positives can be taken away from the Dons' past 12 months.
Add in a busy off-season of recruitment and further reps into their young core, and 2024 could be the year the Bombers snap their unwanted winless run come finals.
2024 expectations
Essendon will be hoping to make their September return this year and hopefully go one further in claiming a win, effectively ending their losing run that dates back 20 years.
The addition of free agents Ben McKay and Jade Gresham should help them to do so, while young talent in Nic Martin, Archie Perkins and Nate Caddy will also have an impact this year and for the years to come.

They'll face a trio of 2023 finalists after their Round 1 meeting with rivals Hawthorn, meaning a strong start to the year will have many eyes on Essendon.
Star Player: Zach Merrett
The Essendon captain was exceptional in his first year as skipper, taking out his fourth best and fairest title as a consistent cog in Brad Scott's midfield ensemble.
Merrett's ability both on the inside and outside of midfield nicely complements the contested work of Darcy Parish and wing addition of Nic Martin, often giving his side an advantage at the coalface. With the Bombers set to make another play for the top eight in 2024, Merrett will be the main man in helping steer his side to September.
