While many trialled the AFL's new format AFLX and took it with a grain of salt, the Brisbane Lions have used it to motivate their young players.

The Lions defeated reigning premiers, Richmond, and fellow powerhouses Greater Western Sydney and Sydney to claim the third leg of the new tournament.

Yet, while for many it was just used as a bit of match fitness, it is part of the culture change taking place in Brisbane.

"It might not matter to the outside world, but for us it means the world," Vice-Captain, Dayne Zorko told afl.com.au.

"We haven't been in a position over the last few years to win too many games, so any opportunity for us to win a game or a little tournament, it's really important that we do develop that winning culture and get the guys to feel what it's like to win again."

While Zorko didn't take part in the inaugural competition of AFLX, he instead trained in gruelling conditions in the humidity of Brisbane on Friday.

"I think there's a few players that might be disappointed they didn't get the opportunity to play; me, Charlie [Cameron], 'Squizzy' [Lewis Taylor]; the little nippy, outside runners that like having shots at goal."

Zorko is coming off his maiden All-Australian selection, and is committed to improving after a career-best season in 2017.

"That's the plan, every year just continue to improve. The last few years I've been able to do that. I was rewarded last year, which was a fantastic honour, but ultimately I want to play finals football."
