A Western Australian man has been charged after allegedly crashing through and entering Optus Stadium in his car and driving recklessly on the playing field.
The 29-year-old Secret Harbour man broke into the stadium through a boom gate on February 1 and has been hit with charges of reckless driving, trespassing and criminal damage or destruction of property.
Optus Stadium staff were able to detain the man before the arrival of the police.
"It will be alleged that at around 11:30am the man drove a black Ford Ranger at speed through a boom gate and a shutter door at the stadium before driving recklessly on the oval," WA Police toldย AFL.com.auย in a statement.
Optus Stadium is understood to be further investigating the matter and will review available security footage.
The alleged perpetrator will face Perth Magistrates Court later this month.
The incident did not cause any significant damage to the playing surface, with Optus Stadium's first AFL match of 2021 hosting the Eagles and Suns on March 21.
