Hawthorn rookie Ned Long has signed a new one-year contract extension with the club, retaining his services at Bunjil Bagora until the end of the 2023 season.

Long, who is yet to feature for Sam Mitchell's side in the AFL, joined the Hawks through last November's Rookie Draft as the fifth overall selection.

The 19-year-old has impressed across his short tenure in the brown and gold, both at training and with Box Hill in the VFL.

Long has recorded double-digit tackle numbers across his past two VFL appearances, while also averaging 17.5 disposals and two marks in that period.

"Since arriving at the club late last year, Ned has shown nothing but hard work and dedication," Hawks national list and recruiting manager Mark McKenzie said, via the club's website.

"Ned plays with high energy and attack which we love to see, and potentially has the capability to play a few different roles in the future.

“Ned is obviously still developing, but we’re really pleased with the steps he has taken since joining the club."

Long was among a promising cohort of new Hawks drafted to the club in the off-season, with Josh Ward, Connor MacDonald, Sam Butler and Jai Serong also venturing to Waverley.

Box Hill are scheduled for a bye this weekend before facing Coburg in Round 5, while Hawthorn will meet with Geelong at the MCG on Easter Monday.
