The Sydney derby between the Swans and Giants at Mars Stadium, Ballarat.

With the ongoing COVID-19 situation in New South Wales, and the Victorian government's decision to close the border between the two states, the AFL confirmed the move on Monday.

The league is understood to be working through plans to potentially have the families of the Giants and Swans playing groups move to Melbourne.

That decision would open complications, with 14 days of isolation required after all of NSW was labeled as a red zone.

Canberra was considered as a potential venue to host the 'Battle of the Bridge', but with the ACT also listed as a red zone as of Monday, the move was seen as too difficult.

"Victorian public health authorities are concerned about the risks of transmission beyond current red zones in Greater Sydney and surrounds, and the potential risks this poses to the Victorian community from people entering our state," a health department statement said, per The Canberra Times.

The match shapes as an enticing fixture for the shape of the AFL ladder, with the Swans now looking to separate themselves from the bottom half of top-eight.

The Giants' finals hopes were hindered over the weekend following their one-point loss to the Suns, with Leon Cameron's side now sitting in 10th, but only outside of the top-eight by two points.

Speaking post-game, Cameron commended the league's proactivity but remained unknown for what's to transpire in the coming days.

“The AFL has been fantastic, communication has been great, clearly there’ll be some decisions made,” Cameron said, per Fox Footy.

“But we’ve been down here for coming up to three weeks and we’re mindful that some big decisions will be made early in the week.

“Whether some people can come down and visit and families, the guys will work that out.

“We have got a huge challenge next Saturday against the Swans, we don’t know exactly where that’s going to be."

The game between Sydney and Greater Western Sydney is fixtured for 1:45pm on Saturday.
