Former Herald Sun Chief Football writer and legendary journalist Mike Sheahan believes Sydney champion Lance Franklin is the most exciting player he's ever seen play the game.

Sheahan, who has been working in the media covering the VFL/AFL since 1969, said that while Buddy may not be the best player of all-time, he certainly is the most exciting with ball in hand.

The journalist believes Wayne Carey is still the best player he's seen, but admitted there's no one in the league who can do some of the things the Hawthorn premiership player can conjure up.

“I’ve never wavered on Carey (being the best), but I don’t think I’ve seen anyone, in the times that I’ve been watching football, who is as exciting as Buddy,” Sheahan told SEN Breakfast on Monday morning.

“During the second quarter I texted a mate of mine and said I think this bloke number 23 is the best player I’ve ever seen. I do admit I get caught up in that.

“He’s not as even as what Duck was, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone who can reach the heights Buddy can.

“He’s 6’6, he’s quick, his awareness is brilliant, a beautiful kick, he’s got the kick depth that no-one else has had before him.

“The excitement element to Franklin is unbelievable.”

Franklin was instrumental once again for the Swans, and booted four goals in their 35-point win over Melbourne at the MCG.

His bag of four now moves him level with GWS forward Jeremy Cameron on top of the Coleman Medal leaderboard with 40, as he looks set to take out his 10th club goalkicking award, and possibly his fourth Coleman.

The 30-year-old currently sits 10th all-time in the AFL goalkicking charts, with 827 goals from his 261 games.
