In huge news for Carlton, it is reported that ex-Fremantle coach Ross Lyon is the favourite to step into the hot seat that is the Blues head coaching role at season's end.

Current coach David Teague has had a below par season 2021, with the ex-Blues player two full seasons into his time with the club and not appearing to have made any real progress with the side.

This lack of progress has put the blowtorch firmly on bespectacled coach, with widespread reports over the past couple of months claiming that he will be shown the door by the Carlton board after the season has concluded.

The club's 95-point flogging at the hands of the Power on Saturday afternoon has by all accounts sealed Teague's fate, with Carlton set to part ways with him in the coming weeks.

With this, Jon Ralph of The Herald Sun has said that all that stands in the way of Ross Lyon securing the Blues job is if departing Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson registers his interest.

Clarkson has endured a rough season 2021 after being ousted prematurely from the Hawks job, with the club choosing to accelerate their coaching succession plan and hand the reins to Sam Mitchell for season 2022.

There has been widespread conjecture about what Clarkson will do after he finally steps out of Waverley Park, with even a move up to Queensland to coach the Suns being floated.

Ross Lyon was adamant he wouldn't return to coaching, with his stints at St Kilda and Fremantle in which he was part of a losing grand final on both occasions supposedly being enough for the 54-year old.

However, after having a brief conversation with Leigh Matthews, Lyon's interest in returning to the box was peaked after feeling underwhelmed by his job in the media.

It is suffice to say regardless of whether it is Lyon or Clarkson sitting at the helm of the Blues next year, the club would have secured a coach who is more than capable of taking them back to the top.

Carlton's final game of the year comes against the Giants on Saturday night, with the match being club legend Eddie Bett's 350th and final game of AFL footy after announcing his retirement on Monday.
