Could Richmond enter a new era with a new captain?

The Tigers have been widely documented to be at the beginning of a rebuild, reflected by their aggressive trade period that helped land an array of high-end draft picks, including future stars Sam Lalor and Josh Smillie.

A part of that strategy was allowing multiple premiership stars to walk to rival clubs, namely Liam Baker to West Coast, who was highly touted as the next skipper of the Punt Road side.

And with ruckman Toby Nankveris hitting the wrong age of 30, a new voice might be what Richmond needs.

Enter star midfielder Tim Taranto.

The former Giant oozes leadership both through actions on the field, and his rigorous and professional standards off it, playing a perfect role model for the next generation of stars.

"There's a lot of young fresh faces and a lot of new midfielders, which is exciting for me," Taranto said.

"Just letting them figure it out for themselves a little bit, but also just being that sounding board.

"I just think back to my time when I was 18 to 20 years old and how much of an impact the older boys had for me, so it's my turn now to repay the favour to them, but also challenge and push them to be the best players they can be."

Taranto hasn't shied away from being the new face of the Tigers following the departures of some club greats in the past two years, including Trent Cotchin, Jack Riewoldt and Dustin Martin.

The young crop of draftees require direction and the 26-year-old is prepared to give it.

"(My role as a leader) is probably going to be similar," he continued.

"I'll obviously play a bit of midfield and show the young boys how to do it, and then try and take my leadership and keep growing that part of my game because I'm really enjoying that.

"It's definitely what I'm enjoying at the moment, finding that balance between being the best player I can be, but also, making the team better as well.

"I get to share my knowledge and my experience now, which I'm really enjoying."

Taranto could join Nankervis in the driver's seat as a co-captain, which the club has previously done when Dylan Grimes joined the latter for seasons 2022 and 2023.
