Kane Cornes believes North Melbourne should extend an opportunity to recently-axed St Kilda coach Brett Ratten.

Ratten, who signed a two-year contract extension with St Kilda during the season, was relieved of his duties last week following another Saints campaign that ended in disappointment.

The Kangaroos, too, are going through an uncomfortable period, with incoming coach Alastair Clarkson's future now uncertain after racism allegations were made against him from his time at Hawthorn.

While it's still unclear whether or not the disconcerting claims made against Clarkson will result in an AFL-sanctioned penalty, Cornes thinks the Roos should give Ratten a call for the sake of contingency.

"I wonder if (North Melbourne) pick up the phone to Brett Ratten," Cornes said on SEN.

"It's very difficult for Brett to find a job in this situation, North Melbourne appears to be a club with an opportunity

"[They] know that he's capable that if Alastair Clarkson was to miss time, Brett Ratten could step in and be the man.

"I'd be surprised if he doesn't end up there, Brett, which would be good for him."

It has been reported that Clarkson's proposed North Melbourne start date of November 1 could be when the four-time premiership coach returns, pending the terms of reference agreement of the AFL's inquiry into the recent allegations.
