Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has slammed Western Bulldogs forward Josh Bruce after a disappointing first season at the kennel.

The Bulldogs forward has struggled to reach expectations since joining the club 12 months ago after being traded from St Kilda.

Speaking on AFL.com.au's Access All Areas, Lloyd labeled Bruce a "massive failure" following the Bulldogs' season-ending defeat to the Saints.

"I thought at the star of the year it was a good trade period for them, bringing in Josh Bruce and Alex Keath," Lloyd said.

"But Bruce has been a massive failure...he really failed again on the weekend."

Lloyd also questioned the support for Tim English, with the ruckman struggling to defend Saints duo Rowan Marshall and Paddy Ryder in Saturday's loss.

"He just does not know how to defend," Lloyd said.

"One of the best midfields in the game but they've got an inexperienced ruckman.

"Probably two lost years if they had a more experienced ruckman to support Tim English, they might have gone a bit deeper."

The Bulldogs have failed to win a final since their miraculous premiership victory in 2016.
