West Coast veteran Sam Mitchell will miss this week's clash with Collingwood at Etihad Stadium.

Coach Adam Simpson revealed on Friday Mitchell will be rested this week after playing 15 of 16 games this season.

Mitchell was named in the squad on Thursday night when teams were released, however, he will be withdrawn from the side when the final teams for Sunday games are named this evening.

Simpson also confirmed Tom Cole will come into the team.

"Tom Cole is going to play this week. He'll play across half back against the Pies," Simpson said.

"He'll no doubt get some time on ball this week. I think in the long term he'll play in the midfield a lot more.

"We're going to give Sam Mitchell a rest this week. He'll come over and coach this week. It's time for a rest. He's showing signs of soreness.

"There's no doubt Sam is in our best 22, but we need to manage him and get some others running through the middle."

Mitchell has averaged 27.1 disposals in his first season at the Eagles.

The Eagles travel to Melbourne to take on the Magpies at Etihad Stadium at 3.20pm AEST on Sunday.
