Hawthorn legend John Kennedy Snr has passed away.

The coaching great died peacefully on Thursday morning aged 91.

Hawthorn released a statement on Thursday morning confirming the sad news.

โ€œOn behalf of the Kennedy family, Hawthorn football club is deeply saddened to hear inform the football community of the passing of AFL legend John Kennedy Snr,โ€ the statement read.

โ€œJohn passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 91."

Just three weeks ago Kennedy Snr became the 29th person elevated to Legend status in the Australian Football Hall of Fame.

He led Hawthorn to three premierships in 1961, 1971 and 1976.

Kennedy Snr played 164 VFL matches for the Hawks and won four best and fairests (1950, 1951, 1952 and 1954) during that time.

His legendary 'Don't think, do something!' speech will long be remembered as one of football's most iconic moments.

โ€œAt least DO SOMETHING! DO! Donโ€™t think, donโ€™t hope, do! At least you can come off and say โ€˜I did this, or I shepherded, or I played on. At least I did somethingโ€™,โ€ Kennedy Snr. famously said.

Rest in peace John.
