A formerย AFLย andย NRLย rookie for the Hawthorn Hawks andย Melbourne Stormย has allegedly been charged with attempted murder.

According toย The Herald Sun,ย Shem Tatupuย has been charged with attempted murder and will face Melbourne Magistrates' Court in August.

It is understood that he was arrested and charged by Victorian police in relation to a family violence matter, per the publication.

Recruited as a Category B rookie by Hawthorn at the end of 2013 as an international scholarship selection, Tatupu spent two seasons with the club before departing Aussie Rules to make the switch to rugby league and take up a contract with the Melbourne Storm in the NRL.

During his tenure at the Hawks, he didn't register a single AFL appearance but did play over 20 matches in the VFL.

Surprisingly, he would return to the VFL in 2019 for Frankston and has also played local football in the Southern and Mornington Peninsula leagues.

"This has been a tough decision for Shem to make. We have been really impressed with the way in which he has applied himself over the past two years, and he has made some positive progress," then-Hawthorn general manager of football operations Chris Fagan said in 2016 about his departure.

"However, after much consultation with the club, Shem has decided that the passion for AFL football is no longer there.

"Shem was a highly regarded rugby league and union player growing up, and he is going to explore his opportunities in that area.

"There is no doubt Shem is a talented athlete and all at Hawthorn Football Club wish him well for the future."
