The Blues have been up and down so far this season, and there is no doubt that despite their efforts in the trade period, still need to strengthen some positions.
We continue our ‘Five trade targets for every club’ series with Carlton. The idea of these stories is to identify potentially gettable targets who could fill roles, not just link every club to the likes of Marcus Bontempelli and Patrick Cripps.
FIVE TRADE TARGETS FOR: Adelaide Crows, Brisbane Lions
With that, here are some players which will help elevate Carlton back to the top after so many years of heartache.
So in no particular order, here is it – five players we think Carlton should have on their hit list.
4. Zach Merrett
There is no doubt Zach Merrett will be the subject of intense interest this trade period, with Carlton amongst many others linked to the Bombers midfield maestro. This one would most likely be dependent on whether stars Patrick Cripps and Harry McKay choose to leave, freeing up salary cap space for the Blues to go after an elite level star.
Should one or both of them leave, then this would free up enough cash for Carlton to have a genuine run at luring Merrett over to Ikon Park. The 25-year-old needs no introduction, with his quality through the middle adding another element to David Teague's side. However, as mentioned, it will probably come at the cost of a couple of their big stars being shown the door.
"I think he's got time to build and grow with this club."@MatthewLloyd18 believes Essendon is still a great fit for Zach Merrett, but understands his desire to start winning finals. #9FootyClassified | Watch @Channel9 pic.twitter.com/UUcxxpdYlL
