Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos is eyeing a 60-40 split between the midfield and forward as he looks to evolve his game into a higher order.

Daicos showed his deep-forward prowess against Carlton on Thursday in the final quarter, resembling a peak Gary Ablett Jr.

The Pies father-son amassed 13 possessions, four clearances, four inside 50s, five score involvements, two goal assists and a goal from 100 percent game time.

"I think it would change every week depending upon who were playing and where I'm needed. Where Jamie Elliott is best suited or Jordan De Goey," Daicos said on SEN.

"But I would like to think that 60-40 split might allow me to play more game time too. It means I can rest full forward and probably not run as much in the midfield."

Daicos revealed that coach Craig McRae has given autonomy to the Brownlow fancy and how he positions himself on the field.

"He's been awesome with bringing me up (to speed) to make the decision out on the ground," Daicos said.

"In particular, that last quarter, I was playing mid-forward, and I felt like I had a match-up where I could go full forward and potentially do some damage. He gives me the opportunity to really drive that.

"I feel like the best players in the comp don't need the ball 30 times times to impact the game. And that's the level I want to get my game too. Whether I have 15 or 20 touches, but a lot of it is forward of centre and doing a lot of damage that way.

"That's the player I want to be."

Ablett, at the peak of his powers, would average over a goal a game, but his best return came in 2010, his final season at Geelong, when he slotted 44 majors.

Daicos hasn't kicked more than 20 goals in a season, but his on track to top that in 2026, averaging a goal a game and 2.6 scores per match.
