Collingwood's hunt for a senior coach is reportedly set to await confirmation from Alastair Clarkson as to what plans the departing Hawthorn coach has for 2022, per AFL.com.au.

Clarkson's tenure with Hawthorn was brought to a close after Saturday's thrilling draw against Richmond, ending a 17-year stint with the club that included four premierships.

Following the announcement that club great Sam Mitchell would be taking over the reigns from next season, stars have begun to align for the Magpies.

While Clarkson recently denied a move to the Holden Centre before the announcement of his abrupt departure, Collingwood are set to express their interest once again.

The Magpies are reported to have an extensive list of candidates in contention to succeed Nathan Buckley, with Clarkson likely framing as the most desirable.

Former Hawthorn official and current Collingwood football boss Graham Wright has stated previously that the club is hoping a decision is made by mid-September.

According to AFL.com.au, the relationship between Clarkson and Wright would be 'manageable', despite previous reports of a rift between the pair.

Wright is part of the search sub-committee for the vacant senior coaching role at Collingwood, with club CEO Mark Anderson, Magpies football director Paul Licuria, director Peter Murphy and former Magpie Luke Ball also leading the search.

Speaking on ABC Sport over the weekend, Ball revealed the search has been hinging on the conclusion of the home and away season, with potential candidates now more accessible.

"Obviously a bit will play out after this weekend, without naming names, that would be fair to say," Ball said.

"Now that a lot of teams' seasons have finished, the process is progressing towards decision time.

"I'm not sure (whether there will be further interviews), that will be decided coming out of this weekend, depending on some potential candidates, what they want to do."

Collingwood are understood to have held interviews with several candidates already, including former Brisbane coach Michael Voss.

Currently an assistant at Port Adelaide, Voss joins fellow club coaches in West Coast's Jaymie Graham, Hawthorn's Craig McRae and Richmond's Adam Kingsley in having held formal discussions with the Magpies.

Collingwood have also been linked to former senior coaches in Don Pyke and Brad Scott.
