Four players sit atop the leaderboard of Zero Hanger's 2025 AFL MVP after the conclusion of Round 1, with three players taking home a full 20 votes this week.
Geelong's star recruit Bailey Smith made a statement in his return from an ACL injury that caused him to miss the 2024 season, his complete performance of 32 disposals and a goal wooing the home crowd at Kardinia Park and our voters in the Cats' 78-point rout of Fremantle.
Joining him in the 20-vote club this week is GWS' Toby Greene and Richmond's Jack Ross. Ross was a key figure in Richmond's boilover win against Carlton, kicking two goals and producing seven clearances from his 28 disposals. Greene's three-goal performance and immense efforts in the closing stages of the Giants' late toppling of Melbourne was enough to earn him a full 20 votes, with teammate Tom Green (11 votes) and Christian Petracca in his return to AFL action (11 votes) polling closely behind.
Despite having an extra game under his belt, Hawthorn's Will Day failed to take advantage to improve his lead after receiving 20 votes in Opening Round, given zero votes this week after being well-held in the Hawks' Friday night victory. Instead, it was Essendon's Jye Caldwell (17 votes) who impressed, valiantly leading Essendon's midfield with 36 disposals, 10 clearances and 11 tackles in an excellent game despite the loss.
Similarly to Day, Finn Callaghan failed to receive votes after a dominant Opening Round performance for the Giants, and is now joined by Izak Rankine (28 disposals, two goals) and Josh Dunkley (27 disposals, one goal) on 19 votes for tied-fifth place on the leaderboard.
Zac Bailey, Dylan Moore, Steele Sidebottom,ย Ben King, and Ed Richards all polled strongly too, each receiving 17 votes this week, with the latter three players polling top votes for their respective games.
