Carlton forward Harry McKay's best-on-ground performance couldn't be more fitting as the Blues held off St Kilda by 15 points in the annualย Spud's Game match.

Friday night's clash marked the fifth edition of the marquee match in honour of the late Danny 'Spud' Frawley to help raise awareness for mental health, and that no one should have to carry their burden alone.

McKay's three-goal performance, which included the sealer, as the Saints were rampaging toward victory, epitomised the Coleman medallist's dramatic turnaround from the beginning of the season.

Despite featuring in the Round 1 loss to Richmond, the left-footer took time away from football after admitting he wasn't in a "great place mentally".

McKay returned in Round 5 against West Coast but was ruled out with a concussion, and was sidelined for another week.

But last night's performance, coupled with his efforts against Geelong, showcased his impressive improvement to deliver on the big stage.

Both outings saw McKay record three majors, 19 disposals, 10 or more marks and timely last-quarter contests that secured the win.

He also assisted Tom De Koning in the ruck, which has proven to be a successful recipe for the 27-year-old.

Speaking to Channel 7 after the game, McKay spread the message about speaking up when you're struggling.

"As it's been said tonight, any time you can talk about it, a problem shared is a problem halved," he said.

"So, I think the more we can talk about it, speak to a mate โ€” everyone's so supportive and brings so much love, so it's really great to be able to have a night like tonight where we can bring it front of mind.

"The more we can speak about it, get around each other and help each other, the world will be a better place."

McKay's heroics have capped off an inspired turnaround by the Blues, who have won four of their past five outings.

Michael Voss' men lost the opening month of football, but now sit just outside the eight after crucial wins against Geelong and the Saints.

Carlton is counting the injury toll for the victory, with Mitch McGovern (chest) and Lachlan Cowan (hamstring) to be sent for scans, while Nick Haynes (head) and Blake Acres (shoulder) were assessed but managed to play out the game.
