Reigning Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale is said to be in 'growing doubt' to make this weekend's trip to Western Australia to face Fremantle for Round 1.

Neale dealt with a back issue across the course of the summer and was placed on limited duties during the pre-season, with the ball magnet not taking part in his side's first practice match due to the ailment.

The Lions co-captain did feature in Brisbane's thrilling Opening Round defeat to Carlton last week, with the club flagging prior to the season's start that Neale may be required to play on limited minutes as he continues to build his workloads.

According to 9 News, the star midfielder is no certainty of flying west with his teammates to face his former club. A News Corp report suggests Neale is dealing with hamstring tightness.

Neale required treatment for his back injury during last week's home clash with the Blues but got through the game unscathed.

The veteran onballer was involved in an incident with Carlton's George Hewett that saw the pair both charged for striking by the AFL's Match Review Officer. Neale challenged the charge, which was upheld, but was only fined as a result.

Brisbane faces Fremantle on Sunday at Optus Stadium to finalise Round 1 of the season, with the Lions needing to make at least one change to the side that fell to the Blues last week.

Defender Keidean Coleman's 2024 campaign has come to a cruel close due to an ACL injury, with Irishman Conor McKenna likely to come into Chris Fagan's side in his place.

Young midfielder Deven Robertson could replace Neale if he doesn't make the trip west, with the former having also been under an injury cloud due to a recent wrist issue.

The Lions will name their initial squad for Sunday's game at 6:20 (AEDT) on Thursday.
