Brisbane premiership coach Chris Fagan has detailed the exact moment when he was about to ask for "time-out" amid a tumultuous period of his career.

Fagan was in the midst of the ongoing Hawthorn racism scandal whilst dealing with a dramatic form slump after the Lions lost the 2023 decider.

Standing in 13th position heading into Round 8 last year, Fagan and his troops were set to face the much-improved Gold Coast side led by Damien Hardwick.

Looking down the barrel of a 2-6 win-loss record, Brisbane managed to pick themselves up off the canvas, but that wasn't before their coach started to question his worth.

"I was probably starting to question myself," Fagan said on Channel 7.

"Certainly everyone else was questioning me.

"I decided before the (Suns game) that morning, that I wasn't going to resign, I was going to ask for time out.

"Maybe take a little bit of time off and try and get myself right again."

Fagan fronted up to the QClash which was ultimately the turning point of the Queensland club's 2024 campaign.

Star defender Brandon Starcevich was pulled from the contest at the 11th hour, and was replaced in the side by debutant Logan Morris.

As most would remember, the unfortunate knee injuries to Lincoln McCarthy and Darcy Gardiner swept the entire Lions bench, while Noah Answerth also suffered a concussion.

"The little man inside my head said, 'You're not gonna do that this week'," Fagan said.

"It would've been a pretty hard thing for the club to cop."

As they say, the rest is history.

Fagan's men went on a historic run from Round 12 onwards, defying all the odds to secure a finals position and become the second team to win the premiership outside the top four.

Ahead of their flag defence, Brisbane was expected to unfurl their 2024 premiership flag on Thursday night at the Gabba against Geelong.

However, the AFL is set to postpone that match to Round 3 due to the incoming Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
