A few names have already been raised as Carlton's next senior coach.

Would a succession plan work?

And what's the latest on State of Origin?

All that and more from media buzz...

Longmuir long shot

The Blues have been urged to go after Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir as they begin their search for Michael Voss' replacement.

Longmuir's peculiar ongoing contract continues to raise eyebrows, and is one of the main reasons Kane Cornes thinks he's perfect for the Blues.

“If you want the best available coach right now, I think it's Justin Longmuir,” Cornes said on Channel 7's The Agenda Setters.

“If you're looking and ranking who are the best coaches in the league, I've got him as the sixth best coach in the league right now.

“Go and at least try and get him. Try and give him a five-year deal at $6 million.

“Give him the security that he needs that Fremantle have been unprepared to give him.

“He is coaching extremely well, eight (wins) in a row ... And he's available right now and he's the sixth best coach in the league. Go and get him.

"Maybe he's happy at Fremantle, I get it's a long shot.

“But at least try and get him if you want a known product that you know can do the job right now."

Roos to the rescue... again?

AFL legend and media personality Gerard Healy believes the Blues should target Paul Roos and begin a succession plan that worked wonders for Melbourne a decade ago.

Roos coached Sydney to a premiership in 2005, and helped the Demons get off the canvas, taking over the club at its weakest point before setting it off on a successful path under Simon Goodwin.

"To me, the perfect model for this job is the Paul Roos, Simon Goodwin handover model," Healy said.

"Appoint Roos if he's available (or Hinkley for that matter if he was agreeable) to take the hits and weather the storm initially as you reset the list, set the ship on the right path off the field and hit the draft hard, and simultaneously appoint an assistant coach like James Kelly, or James Rahilly out of the Geelong SuperCoach factory to take over in two years time.

"Roos is currently on a beach in Hawaii, reaching for the factor 15 (sunscreen).

"He's refreshed and ready to go and knows exactly what is required in this situation."

Hawks list boss on Carlton's radar

The Blues are not only searching for a new senior coach, but also a list manager.

Nick Austin departed shortly after Michael Voss left Carlton, opening up another vacancy. Enter Hawthorn's Mark McKenzie.

State of Origin carnival

The return of state-vs-state football has excited the AFL landscape to a point where it's now being discussed of a carnival as soon as 2029.

The 2026 return of State of Origin was a raging success, with Victoria narrowly pipping Western Australia in the revival.

It is understood that South Australian will join the rival states next year, and will host the clash in 2028 as the league considers how it'll look going forward.
