Out-of-favour Melbourne forward Tom McDonald is "officially up for grabs" according to journalist Sam McClure.

McDonald struggled to fill a role in Simon Goodwin's side this season and despite having two more years on his contract, the 28-year-old is likely to depart the Demons.

Speaking on Sportsday, McClure suggested that McDonald's future with Melbourne is in the balance.

“Tom McDonald is officially up for grabs,” he said.

“He’s got two years left on his deal, the Magpies have reached out and just asked some questions. I’m not sure whether they’ll be the ones he eventually goes to ... I don’t think he’ll be at Melbourne next year.”

Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy added to the report, believing there to be a rift between both parties.

“I think they’ve made their minds up. It sounds like that relationship is just about broken,” he said.

“He’s moving and they’re happy for him to move ... it looks to me like he’s just lost that confidence that he had.

“Maybe he’s destined to return to the backline. I’m not sure where Collingwood see him fitting in but they recruited Jeremy Howe as a forward and turned him into one of the great defenders of the last five or six years.”
