The AFL will seek a 'please explain' from Swans co-captain Dane Rampe after controversially climbing the goal post in the dying stages of his side's win over Essendon on Friday night, reportsĀ AFL.com.au.

The All-Australian defender will be questioned on two incidents from the SCG clash, the other a confrontation with umpire Brent Wallace who Rampe declared:"talks like a little girl", after giving away a free kick.

While the goal post incident has come under more scrutiny, it is understood that the AFL will come down hard on Rampe for showing disrespect to a match official.

Per AFL rules, Part (a) of 17.11 states the player from the attacking team who was about to or who has kicked for goal shall take the free kick at the centre of the goal line.

However, league CEO Gillon McLachlan defended the decision as "practical umpiring" and Match Review Officer Michael Christian didn't issue Rampe any financial sanctions.

The Swans will be a sent a "please explain" letter from the AFL on Monday afternoon regarding Rampe's actions.
