The AFL will look into GWS' use of their runner and former Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell following vision that emerged from the Carlton-GWS clash on Sunday.

A League spokesman told AFL.com.auย the field umpires from Sunday's game made note of the amount of time Maxwell spent on the ground, and said the issue was raised in the AFL's post-round meeting and will be reviewed in the coming days.

Channel Nine's Footy Classifiedย also picked up on Maxwell's positioning during the match and spoke about it on Monday night, and said it was a tactic by the Giants to disrupt Carlton's kick-ins.

All runners are not allowed to stand in the opposition's defensive 50 on kick-ins, but are able to stand anywhere else on the ground.

SEN'sย Danny Frawley said the AFL needs to look every runner's time spent out on the ground, and says it needs to return to just sending out the runner for a message and nothing else.

"If you actually watch the runners at the moment, they're just out there far too long. Sprint on, sprint off, [don't be] out there for five to six minutes at a time," Frawley said on SEN on Monday.

"Simon Lethlean needs to have a look at the game to know what I'm talking about. It's just not on, make a stand.

"(Maxwell) is just biting off too much at the moment. He's out there coaching, telling players where to run.

"The big one that hurt me yesterday โ€“ and that's when I thought I can't watch it any more โ€“ย  Carlton was kicking in, he was right on the centre-square line in the middle, he was actually part of the zone.

"I know the AFL says you can't go inside the forward 50, but you can't have them standing in the middle of the ground where the 45 (degree) kick comes in.

"(Maxwell) is doing a great job down there with the leadership, but you can't have 19 men on the field."
