Essendon great Mark 'Bomber' Thompson has had his Port Melbourne home raided by Victoria Police, as they continue on with a big state-wide investigation.

Police raided Thompson's home on Friday foxsports.com.au revealed, with the raid taking a few hours, beginning in the morning and working well into the afternoon.

While officials would not reveal the exact purpose for their search, Victoria Police told foxsports.com.au no charged were laid on the 54-year-old.

Thompson played 202 matches for Essendon between 1983 to 1996 and won three premierships with the club, and moved into coaching in 2000, leading the Cats to two premierships and 260 games.

The veteran coach also took charge of Essendon in 2014 following the supplements saga that took place a season earlier, and during a event on drugs in sport at the Law Institute of Victoria, Thompson said the drugs scandal would eventually end up killing him.

“It just sits in my guts and churns and it still does and it’s going to probably end up killing me because I can’t let it go,” Thompson said in April last year.

“People tell me I’ve got to let it go, but I can’t.

“I don’t like the game anymore, I don’t want to work in the AFL system, I don’t want to associate with people. I’m sorry, but that’s the way it is.”
