Geelong has reportedly entered the race to sign Fremantle forward Hayden Ballantyne.

It is understood Ballantyne will request a trade, with West Coast his preferred destination.

However, the Herald Sun reports that the Cats are also interested in the enigmatic forward.

Chris Scott is said to be a fan of the 29-year-old and he previously tried to lure Ballantyne to Geelong when he first took over as coach in 2010.

If Ballantyne is open to the move, a straight player swap could be orchestrated with Geelong forward Shane Kersten.

Kersten, who has struggled to cement his place in the senior side, is understood to be open to a move to his home state of Western Australia, with the Dockers said to be interested in the sharp shooter.

Essendon, GWS and West Coast are all also reportedly interested in Ballantyne.

He has kicked 221 goals in 141 career games with the Dockers.
