Fremantle forward Patrick Voss played a breakout game at the MCG on Sunday, kicking six goals to lead his side to an upset one-point victory over Collingwood at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.

The 20-gamer had previously never kicked more than three in a game and had that by quarter time, kickstarting the Dockers' effort.

His forward presence helped the visitors stay in touch through the middle of the game despite Collingwood dominating territory for large periods, before he kicked a crucial set shot in the last quarter.

"Outstanding," coach Justin Longmuir said of Voss.

"And love (that he kicked goals) clearly, but he had a role and we asked him to do that role early in the week and he'd do anything for us, 'Vossy', and he got rewarded today in that role.

"Sometimes you try to nullify the best key defender, and he did Sicily last week and didn't get the rewards, but he's done it for the team.

"This week, he did both and clearly had a big impact on the game.

"As soon as he came to the club, he worked his backside off.

"A lot gets talked about with 'Vossy' and his energy and his carry on after goals, but there's not a player on our list who's worked harder on his game.

"At 6.30 am, he's got the Voss Academy going with all the other talls and has got them in there doing extra marking.

"He got reward for effort for doing a role for us today, but this type of performance is reward for effort he's put into his game, for I would imagine, many years."

It's a significant victory for the Dockers and continues a recent trend of rising against the best, having beaten Western Bulldogs, GWS, Gold Coast, Adelaide and Hawthorn this season to announce themselves.

"Coming here, playing against the best team in the comp, I think we did it against Melbourne a couple of years ago when they had won 10 in a row, and it's never easy," Longmuir said.

"You're playing the Magpie army as well as the team, so it was really gutsy to be able to hang in there all day and come to life in the last quarter.

"In three of the last four weeks, we've been behind at three-quarter-time and found something.

"We couldn't quite get over the line against Sydney, but in the other three games, we've come out on top.

"We're a fit team, there's belief in that, and I feel like when we get momentum on our side, we can really cash in.

"I just think it was really gritty in the first three quarters.

"Our backs were under a lot of pressure, but they just hung in and then kept playing the next moment.

"We tried to open up the game at three-quarter-time and I thought we were a bit braver with the ball, especially with our hands and created opportunities."

In another positive, Hayden Young returned unscathed after a long-term layoff, coming on in the second half as a substitute and playing a significant role in giving Freo more supply forward of the footy.

He set up Luke Jackson's goal, which proved to be the decisive moment.

"We erred a little bit, probably needed to get him in a little bit earlier," Longmuir said.
"We just needed to make a decision on who to sub out. I think we made the right call in the end, and he got some minutes in, and that's important for his build.

"And as far as coming up to the tempo of the game, he didn't look out of place, so (I'm) happy with how he went.

The result was soured by an ankle injury to Matthew Johnson in the fourth quarter, which Longmuir indicated could be serious.

"He's got an ankle injury, he's sore, felt a crack, so he's on crutches, not a good sign, but don't want to go too early with it."

The coach also offered his thoughts on a controversial dissent 50 metre penalty which resulted in a Lachie Schultz goal in the first quarter.

"I'm not allowed to say anything about it, but how often have we seen that paid this year?" he said.

"I see it 10, 20 times every weekend, and I just don't see it paid.

"Are we going to stamp it out or are we not?

"Is it going to be paid or is it not, and I don't make that call."
