While Friday night's Hawthorn vs. Western Bulldogs clash was rightfully billed as a match to see of some of the game's current stars, it was also a special moment for a certain Hawthorn recruit.

With Luke Hodge, Josh Gibson, Matthew Boyd and Bob Murphy all saying goodbye to the game, former Gold Coast midfielder Jaeger O'Meara won his first match of AFL football since 2014.

After his 2015 and 2016 campaigns were entirely wiped out due to injury, O'Meara moved to Victoria and joined Hawthorn at the end of last season, and had only managed five matches (and five losses) for the hawks before Friday's win.

It was his first competitive win in 1119 days at AFL level, and he was understandably wrapped with the performance.

“It was important for us to send Hodgey and Gibbo (Josh Gibson) off, they have both been warriors of the footy club,” O’Meara told Channel 7 after the match.

“It was really important that we got the win and the way we did it as well was good.

“I knew (Hodgey) was a fierce competitor, but he doesn’t mind having some fun as well.

“I am really happy that I got to play the year with him, I wish he was playing for a few more years.”

However, in his tireless bid to return to a winning side, O'Meara may have just glanced over the Hawthorn team song, and judging by the video below, he may need to put a little more time into learning the words over the off-season.

The song begins at the 5:30 mark in the clip.
