The Sydney Swans have begun their search to find the ball that sailed through the sticks at the Paddington End of the SCG as Lance Franklin booted his 1000th goal, and they might not have to look far.

In the final minutes of Friday night's clash between the Swans and Cats, Franklin amassed a milestone only reached five times prior in the game's history.

While fans began to swarm 'Buddy' after his fourth goal of the game and 1000th of his career, those behind the goal were awaiting for the Sherrin to land in their lap.

One lucky fan was able to snatch the ball from the air and hold onto a piece of history, with footage emerging on Saturday of the man in question.

The Swans are understood to have launched an appeal into locating the ball, offering rewards for whoever can return it to the club and Franklin.

Sydney is about to launch an appeal to find Buddy’s 1000th goal Sherrin,” SEN's Sam Edmund said on Crunch Time.

“There is a reward (for the person) – they can come to training, meet Lance (Franklin) and hand the ball over.

“I’m not sure how they’re going to get the ball back, whoever has got it is sitting on something significant.

Sydney is combing through the (security) vision at the moment (to find the person).”

Should the ball be returned to the club, the Swans are set to offer the chance of meeting Franklin and attending club training, among other incentives.

The Swans have form in this particular area having invited a young fan down to training just last year after she was reticent to return a game-ball after it ended up in her arms.

Although history suggests that historic home-run and touchdown balls usually find their way back into the arms of their architects, Franklin is sure to be hoping that he won't have to part with the same price as Tom Brady for the Wilson used to score his 600th six-pointer.
