GWS has reportedly made contact with sacked Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin for a role at the club in 2026.

Only a week after the Demons opted to find a "new voice", Goodwin has since spoken to the Giants.

The 2021 premiership coach was "shocked" to learn of the decision, but remains invested in returning to senior coaching at some stage.

"Simon Goodwin has spoken with GWS over a role for next year," Mitch Cleary said on 7NEWS on Wednesday.

"The link ... his wife is based in Sydney, and Goodwin is expected to spend extended periods in the Harbour City.

"There's been a significant increase to the soft cap for football spending for 2026, so the Giants could afford it too."

Goodwin, speaking on Fox Footy's AFL360, addressed the links to GWS.

"I've spent some time up in Sydney, and I'm going to catch up with a whole range of different people," he said.

"I'm open-minded to doing any thing in football. I love the game, I love coaching. I want to get away, have a spell ... (but) coaching's never complete, you want to get better. And I know with the experience and everything that's I've gone through, with some PD (personal development), I'll come back even better."

West Coast coach and former Demons assistant Andrew McQualter said that Goodwin had a "big influence" on him, and that he'd be "back in the business before we know it".

"I spoke to 'Goody' via text as it happened... I really rate him, he was a really influential person on my career," McQualter said.

"I don't know if 'Goody' will move over here, but he's someone that's had a big influence on my career, so if he's willing to help, I'd ask the question."

The 2021 premiership coach revealed the sole reason for the club's decision to part ways, despite his endeavour to take this club back into premiership contention.

"That was the (only) reason I got; that they needed a fresh and new voice and someone new to take them forward," he said.

"I accept that decision, I don't need to seek anymore. I'm sure they went through a deeper process of what that looked like."

He continued by saying he would have "loved" to have had the opportunity to explain the "process moving forward and the strategy needed", but Goodwin has ultimately accepted Melbourne's decision.

"I had a standard board meeting the week before, and didn't have an inkling at that point. But as I said, I'm sure the board went through a thorough process."

Troy Chaplin replaced Goodwin as the caretaker coach for the final three games of the 2025 season.

Former Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley is the favourite for the role, although a host of untried mentors will put their hand up for the position.
