Superstar Marcus Bontempelli's future at the Western Bulldogs was reported to be up in the air, with the out-of-contract midfielder yet to sign an extension with the club.

While this is the typical off-contract approach for Bontempelli, The West Australian reported that the West Coast Eagles would look to make a play for the three-time Leigh Matthews Trophy winner, as well as Collingwood, who were considered front-runners if he were to depart the Whitten Oval.

However, veteran journalist Caroline Wilson has aimed to quash these rumours, "convinced" Bontempelli will remain a Bulldog for the foreseeable future.

"He's not going anywhere, he does this every contract," Wilson said on The Agenda Setters on Monday night. "I'm absolutely convinced he's not going anywhere, and I don't think the Bulldogs have any issues at all with him."

Nick Reiwoldt supported Bontempelli's approach to his off-contract talks.

"He's entitled to [wait]," Reiwoldt said. "When there's so much conjecture around the coach and whether he's going to stay, I think you're entitled to do that as a player. I think he wants to see what the direction is... This is how you negotiate a contract."

The news comes off the back of Bontempelli's electrifying 30-disposal, two-goal return from injury in his season debut on Sunday night, the Bulldogs running out 71-point victors over St Kilda.
