Tasmania is finally set to have its own football team in 2019 following the AFL's announcement on Wednesday that six new teams will be added to the AFLW by 2020.

The League announced yesterday that two teams will be added to the AFLW in 2019, one of which will be based primarily in Tasmania, and a further four teams in 2020.

North Melbourne, who currently play three home games in Hobart each year, will have a team based on the Apple Isle.

The will be named the North Melbourne Tasmania Kangaroos and will join Geelong in the AFLW in 2019.

Meanwhile, Richmond, St Kilda, West Coast and Gold Coast have won licences to be added into the competition in 2020.

The North Melbourne Tasmania Kangaroos will play at least half their home games at the University of Tasmania Stadium, while there is also potential to also play at other venues around the state.

They will also wear a special Tasmanian guernsey when playing in Tassie, pictured below.
