Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli's future is quickly becoming a point of contention, with reports indicating both Collingwood and West Coast are prepared to make plays for him.

Bontempelli has long been considered one of the Bulldogs' greatest players, and at age 29, still has plenty to give.

But entering 2025, and as he has done his entire career, the midfielder has always held off contract talks until later in the season, and his current situation is no different, giving rivals a chance to lurk in the shadows.

A report from the West Australia suggests that the Eagles are devising a plan for Bontempelli, in the hope of adding some much-needed experience and A-grade talent at the club, which could also help wunderkind Harley Reid remain put.

However, the paper reported that if Bontempelli were to explore his options, that the Pies would be leading the race, if he doesn't re-sign at the Bulldogs.

"West Coast are looking to make a major play for Bulldogs megastar and skipper Marcus Bontempelli, club insiders have told The West Australian," the report said.

"Sources within the Eagles told The West the club was in talks about "making a play" for the Bulldogs captain to add much-needed experience to their young list.

"But West Coast could be in a race against time, with Collingwood considered the frontrunner to poach Bontempelli if he does not re-sign with the Dogs.

"It is understood the 29-year-old, who is managed by TGI Sports, has been in talks with the Magpies and would meet with the club again in coming weeks."

Bontempelli returned to play for the first time in 2025 due to a complex calf injury in the pre-season, picking up where he left off in years gone by.

The Bulldogs defeated St Kilda by 71 points on Sunday evening at Marvel Stadium, with the champion midfielder recording 30 disposals, eight clearances, two goals, two goal assists and five marks in a complete performance, all from 71 per cent game time.

The news surrounding Bontempelli's future comes as superstar forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan's time at the Whitten Oval appears more clouded than ever before.
