The Geelong Cats have been the kings of the trade period for some time now, seemingly in the conversation for every out-of-contract star. The club has secured the rights to several big fish up for grabs in the last decade, most notably Patrick Dangerfield, Jeremy Cameron and Bailey Smith.

While the list build at Geelong has been a strong one, there are still areas of concern that need to be addressed. The ruck situation at Kardinia Park has long been scrutinised, and it remains the weakest element of their roster.

With several key figures in the twilight years of their stellar careers in the likes of Mitch Duncan, Dangerfield and Mark Blicavs, the Cats' stocks across the ground will need some retooling. While the development of young stars such as Shannon Neale and Ollie Dempsey will help this cause, it's not a be-all-end-all solution.

So, here are five trade and free agency targets for Geelong to consider this year.

5Darcy Gardiner

Gardiner has fallen out of favour at the Gabba, featuring in just 17 games in the last three seasons. His versatility in defence could be a significant help to the Cats' backline, covering for their injured medium defence stocks.

Jake Kolodjashnij and Jed Bews have been fighting injuries the past two years and their absence has been notable, so strengthening Geelong's depth in this role will help their defensive pains.

Gardiner brings strong defensive IQ to the Cats' backline with his intercept and spoiling ability a strong suit, and statistically, brings similar qualities to Kolodjashnij with a good kicking efficiency of 74% and an average of 13.4 metres gained per disposal.

Gardiner has played forward in spurts for the Lions this season too, and has kicked six goals with an accuracy of 75%. That's something Geelong would enjoy having the luxury of, if he were to become an option for the Cats this off-season.
