Yet another controversial deliberate out of bounds decision over the weekend had fans up in arms.

The new interpretation of the rule has brought much debate and heavy criticism from some.

But the AFL rules of the game committee has at least one fan, with Richmond spearhead Jack Riewoldt a big advocate of the new, stricter ruling.

“I think it is the best rule that has been brought in,” Riewoldt said on Fox Footy's AFL 360 on Tuesday night.

“It is by far one of the most crowd engaging rules we have.

"It has certainly led to a better style of game. The area where we are probably seeing it played the best is deep in front of the goal face and sides are really struggling to keep the ball in.”

Riewoldt believes it is not only exciting for fans, but also ensures a better game for the players.

“I think it’s brought about a better style of game,” Riewoldt added.

“Look, you will cop a bad one every now and then. It is bloody hard to play the game and I can’t imagine how hard it is to umpire the game.

“It’s brought about a more engaging game. I know that a lot of fans don’t like it.

“Players are smart. They know how to get the ball out of bounds."

Umpires boss Simon Lethlean admitted during the week a free kick paid GWS co-captain for deliberate out of bounds over the weekend was wrong, while the free kick paid against Richmond's Jayden Short for the same offence in the final minutes of the loss tot he Bulldogs, "looks a bit harsh".
