The AFL has announced a single mid-season rookie draft will take place in 2021, not opting for multiple periods throughout next season.

All 18 clubs were notified of the league's decision this week, with the draft scheduled for Wednesday, June 2 next year.

13 players were selected in the 2019 mid-season draft, highlighted by two-time Richmond player Marlion Pickett.

The AFL will keep the single draft formula, with league representatives initially contemplating a monthly period that would allow clubs to fill list spots or replace inactive players, before opting for its original method.

The league also confirmed that the pre-season supplemental selection period will commence on January 6 and ends on March 9.
