With AFL clubs having returned for pre-season training, the countdown for the 2026 season is on.

Coaches begin experimenting with new game plans and younger players begin pushing for spots. Every session counts as players push for Round 1 selection.

But not all players feel the same levels of pressure, with some under far more scrutiny than others. Whether it was a failed trade move, underperformance or stalled development, these are the 10 AFL players with a point to prove in 2026.

2Zach Merrett

Merrett's failed trade request to the Hawks was the story of the trade period. The Merrett camp was very vocal throughout the trade period in an attempt to get him to Hawthorn, but it was to no avail as the two clubs failed to strike a deal before the deadline.

Merrett had a stellar 2025, winning his sixth Crichton Medal as the Bomber's best and fairest. He averaged 27.8 disposals and four clearances per game playing mainly through the midfield, although he was occasionally deployed across half-back and half-forward by Brad Scott.

There is no doubting Merrett's ability - he is a genuine star of the competition. However, with lingering questions surrounding his commitment to Essendon as a result of the failed trade request, he will be looking for a big 2026 after stepping down as captain of the club.
