West Coast coach Andrew McQualter is extremely buoyed by Brady Hough's versatility, saying he is touted for more midfield roles.

Hough began his career as a lockdown defender, who has been tasked with curbing some of the league's dangerous small forwards, including Charlie Cameron, Tom Papley, Toby Greene and Shai Bolton to name a few.

But in the wake of Harley Reid's inconsistent form and subsequent positional change, the former Pick 31 in the 2021 National Draft has been thrust into the centre.

In Sunday's 28-point victory over St Kilda and maiden win of the season, which was played in the same spirit and manner as 2006 premiership player Adam Selwood following his passing the day before, Hough spent large amounts of time on-ball to good effect.

The 21-year-old also kicked his first AFL goal.

"I've been at 'Houghy' all year to kick a goal," McQualter said.

"Every single training, I've been stirring him up. But you can see how the players celebrated that Houghy is an incredibly popular member of our team.

"But I made it clear he hadn't kicked an AFL goal, so that's why they celebrated so hard."

Hough gathered 24 disposals, five inside 50s, two clearances and six marks, proving that his development in the midfield is coming in leaps and bounds.

"I think he's really growing in the role. He's been a wonderful defender for this footy club for a period of time, but we think he's got more scope in his game," McQualter continued.

"And we know, at any time, we can move him back and he'll still be able to contribute to our team.

"I think the future is very exciting for Houghy through the midfield."

Hough re-signed with the Eagles in August last year, penning a three-year extension (end of 2028) that will hopefully supercharge the club's rebuild.
