It's often labelled a midfielder's competition, and the AFL has seen a plethora of elite talent in this position, particularly in recent seasons.
Most annual AFL awards and accomplishments are achieved out of the midfield position and while many argue that premierships start with the backline, it is clear that dynasties are made by the midfield (see Richmond, Hawthorn, Brisbane).
While it is scrutinised by many pundits, every AFL All-Australian team is littered with them, 2022 alone featured eight mids all over the ground.
Without further ado, here are our rankings of the top 10 midfielders of 2022.

1. Lachie Neale
Lachie Neale's stats don't seem to match the likes of some previous players on the list, but his impact and value to a team is unquestionable.
He averages 30 disposals, 7.6 clearances and 6.5 score involvements per game, often with two opponents sticking to him like glue. He does not have a midfield teammate quite at the level of Christian Petracca like Clayton Oliver has to attract some attention; he is the single focus for every opponent pre-game.

In recent seasons, he has developed into one of the most explosive players in the league, while adding a goalkicking threat to his repertoire, and he performs best on the biggest stage as you expect from the greats.
With the additions of Josh Dunkley and Will Ashcroft into the Lions' midfield, there is potential for Neale to escape a heavy tag more often and be given the chance to unleash and put together some monster performances on an even more consistent basis.
Lions fans will be excited for what Lachie Neale has in store for the competition in 2023 as Brisbane looks to challenge for a flag as soon as possible.
Honourable Mentions: Jack Macrae, Darcy Parish, Cameron Guthrie, Sam Walsh, Zach Merrett, Jack Steele
