After the completion of the 2025 AFL Draft, which saw 84 players selected by top-flight clubs, many fans and analysts have begun evaluating the potential of these draftees to leave an early mark.
While a pre-season is still ahead of us, there are already several prospects who are considered ready for the elite level of competition.
We highlight eight of the top candidates likely to make their debut in the early stages of the 2026 season.
Billy Cootee (Sydney)
The mature-age recruits are quickly becoming a focus point for Sydney, and Cootee is just another example.
The 22-year-old midfield-forward stands at 178cm and played 21 senior matches for the Norwood Redlegs (SANFL) in 2025, winning their best and fairest.
Cootee was a leading piece in the Redlegs' strong 2025 SANFL season, averaging 22.8 disposals, 5.2 tackles and 4.9 clearances, and kicked 24 goals from his 21 outings this year.
He also spent time at Essendon's VFL team, captaining the side in 2023.
Known for his high work ethic and a great understanding of the game, Cootee is a hard-working high forward who can play through the midfield.
"We like his fast feet getting out of traffic, neat ball use. We think he can play around the square, high half-forward, but maybe pinch hit inside," Swans list lead Chris Keane said of Cootee.
"He's a great character, a ripping person, and we're chuffed to bring him into the footy club.
The Swans open the season against Carlton in Opening Round.
