While St Kilda's draft plan will likely be dramatically shaped by the fallout of the impending Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera free agency decision, one thing remains clear; they need midfielders.
The Saints current draft hands contains picks 5, 41 and 58, presenting them with the opportunity to trade up into the second round. This will be important if they are to obtain Next Generation Academy prospect Kye Fincher, who starred at the National Championships for Vic Metro, averaging 20.5 disposals and 3.8 marks over four games.
According to Craft of the Draft analyst Darren Parkin, the Saints midfield requires "not just grunt, but midfield polish" to help push them past being a modest outfit. Fincher has the potential to alter that brand.
"Fincher has that athleticism, an ability to take a speckie and is quite dangerous off half-back," Craft of the Draft analyst Jonty Ralphsmith said.
Another player that could be of interest is South Australian midfielder Sam Cumming, who could be another successful selection from the state for St Kilda in a similar respect to Wanganeen-Milera, Mattaes Phillipou and Callum Wilkie.
"A possibility that would be ideal for the Saints would be Sam Cumming, the under-18s All-Australian," Ralphsmith said.
"He's a midfield-forward who's got the capacity to be really dangerous at ground level. He's a tough matchup in the forward line because he's a good mark too. When he goes into the midfield, he's got that skill and isn't just your outside runner.
"I think eventually down the line he can be that clearance winner as well."
