Should a Showdown be played at the MCG? Six Points co-host Mark Stevens thinks so.
Stevens, who brought up last week on the Six Points podcast that a clash between cross-town rivals Adelaide and Port Adelaide should be played in Gather Round, once again doubled down on South Australian flavour, saying the enthralling contest should cross state lines.
"If you're going to have Gather Round to celebrate footy, and get Victorians to Adelaide, and they're (Adelaide and Port Adelaide) not going to play each other in a Showdown, well (do it) in reverse," Stevens said.
"One Showdown a year in Melbourne at the MCG. Reverse Gather Round.
"So Adelaide people can come here, that's payback. Adelaide people can travel here, celebrate the game. We love a Showdown. There'll be a few theatre goers coming from Melbourne, let's invite all the Adelaide people over.
"One year it will be a Port home game at the G, next year it would be Adelaide. You rotate it. You can also have Gather Round. It's a bit of payback for us giving Gather Round to Adelaide.
"I'm just saying, for the South Australians, they can get record Showdown crowds. They can all come over, both clubs can fill the MCG. There could be 70-80,000. Good experience for both Adelaide and Port to play at the G.
"I can't see anything wrong with it. You can still have one Showdown in Adelaide.
"It's just spreading the footy love."
Co-host Daniel Harford queried the benefits of a Showdown to the AFL, which Stevens responded: "It's great for the Victorian economy. We need it Harf.
"You been down Bourke Street lately? The CBD, at times, is pretty quiet. It's good for Victoria. Maybe the Victorian government should get involved and sponsor it to get a Showdown here.
"And I guarantee they'll get more here than the 50,000 (fans) they get at Adelaide Oval.
"It'll improve the fairness of the competition."
