Sacked Melbourne premiership coach Simon Goodwin will join the Sydney Swans in his next career venture, with the club announcing his appointment as the Director of Coaching and Performance on Friday.

Goodwin has turned down interest from GWS and West Coast to join the Swans, with Goodwin expected to work closely with senior coach Dean Cox and his panel of assistants to "drive high-performance standards on and off the field" in the role.

Goodwin said he is keen to begin his tenure in Sydney after being relieved of his duties with the Demons in August, which abruptly ended a nine-year tenure as senior coach of the club, which included winning the 2021 premiership.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to be joining Sydney as I've always admired how the Swans work hard and take care of their people," Goodwin said.

"Sydney is a club that has achieved sustained success, and I'm looking forward to helping continue that tradition by developing the coaches and players who will shape the club's future."

Swans Executive GM of AFL Football, Leon Cameron, spoke about what Goodwin's addition means for Sydney and how his role will benefit the club next season and beyond.

"We're really excited to welcome Simon to Sydney. He's a proven leader, a creative thinker, and someone who's passionate about helping our game grow, which is so important in the NSW market," Cameron said.

"A big part of Simon's job will be helping our coaches grow and develop, and we know his experience will be invaluable."
