The Demons upset the Gold Coast Suns on Easter Sunday, coming away with a 20-point victory over Damien Hardwick's side.
On the Six Points AFL podcast, hosts Daniel Harford and Mark Stevens were impressed with the Demons' game style under new coach, Steven King, and how AFL rule changes have given the Demons a new lease of life.
Harford believes the new rule changes that "sheriff" Greg Swann has introduced have benefited the Demons so far.
"What has happened in the offseason, the general, the sheriff, has come in - Greg Swann - he's changed the game, he's opened the game up a bit with the law-making and the adjustment to the rules," Harford said.
"I go back to Sunday, where Melbourne took on the Gold Coast, and just watched Melbourne play and the amazing freedom and boldness that they play, I call it really bold footy, and I think it's on the back of what they have created from the law-making perspective."
Harford has been impressed with Steven King's first four games leading the Demons in 2026.
"Steven King in four weeks has shown everyone in the country, not only he is a very, very fine coach and able to implement a plan, but what you can do, how you can play this game under the modern interpretations," the former Hawthorn midfielder said.
"I was utterly impressed with Melbourne, they were under the pump at one stage against Gold Coast, particularly early in the game, found their groove, got the ball back on their terms a bit, and then were really bold with their possession."
"It was highlighted by Jacob Van Rooyen, on the Shane Warne Stand wing, who pulled a 45-degree kick 45 metres, to Sharp, who ended up getting the ball deep, and they got a goal. He would never have pulled that kick in the previous regime, under the old school footy, he wouldn't have taken that option."
Stevens called the Demons' new game plan under King, "sexy but dangerous."
"Credit to the Demons, they are like a phone without a cover on it, Harf, sexy but dangerous," Stevens said.
"So it's a great feel, and that's exactly what they are doing, they're almost being de-coached if you like, so just keeping it simple, obviously not many instructions, go out and play like it's under 16s."
The Demons face-off with Essendon next weekend at Gather Round in Adelaide and will have another chance to show the country and the rest of the league their new "sexy" game plan.
