St Kilda have made a desperate play in the Marcus Windhager sweepstakes, reportedly increasing his contract offer from two years to a four-year deal in an attempt to retain his talents at the Moorabbin-based club.

According to 9News' Tom Morris, the Saints have increased the length of Windhager's tabled offer to close the gap between them and the reported length of North Melbourne's rival offer, which sits at five years.

It was reported last week by AFL Media's Cal Twomey on Gettable that it would "take four or five years" for Windhager to leave St Kilda, but with the latest change in his extension details from the Saints, Morris believes Windhager is "significantly more likely to stay".

The race for the 22-year-old rising star had been developing rapidly in recent weeks, with North Melbourne, Essendon and Melbourne all reportedly showing interest in acquiring his talents, while the Giants lurked as an outside chance with Windhager's ties to star midfielder Finn Callaghan.

Windhager has been open to moving clubs in the search for more on-ball midfield opportunities, having primarily featured in a tagging role or on the wings this season. He averaged 22.1 disposals, 3.4 inside 50s and 4.7 score involvements per game in 2025, all career highs.
